Ingredients to Stock up on
Once grilling season rolls around, I try to keep a few staple ingredients stocked in my kitchen so I can throw together an easy dinner without much planning. Whether I’m making burgers for friends, grilling chicken for a quick weeknight meal, or tossing vegetables on the grill as a side dish, these are the ingredients I find myself reaching for over and over again. I still buy fresh meats and produce as needed, but having these basics on hand makes summer cooking so much easier.
Shopping List:
- Buns: burger and hot dog buns
- Condiments: ketchup, mayonnaise, mustard
- Toppings: pickles, relish, cheese, onion
- Seasonings & Spices: salt & pepper, ranch seasoning, seasoned salt (like Lawry’s), chili seasoning, etc.
- Dipping & Sauces: BBQ sauce, aioli, burger sauce
- Be sure to check out our Grocery List printable to see what to stay stocked up on year round!
Summer Grilling Basic Tips
- Start with a clean, preheated grill. Give the grates a good scrub before cooking and let the grill fully preheat. Clean, hot grates help prevent sticking and create better grill marks.
- Set up your grill safely. Always place your grill on a stable, level surface and keep it away from decks, railings, overhanging branches, and anything flammable.
- Avoid flipping too often. Let the meat cook undisturbed until it naturally releases from the grates, then flip it once. Constant flipping can prevent proper browning and make it harder to develop that delicious grilled crust.
- Match the heat to the food. Quick-cooking foods like burgers, hot dogs, shrimp, and vegetables do well over medium-high to high heat. Larger cuts of meat, ribs, and bone-in chicken benefit from lower temperatures and longer cooking times so they stay juicy and cook evenly.
- Use foil packets for easy sides. Aluminum foil packets are one of the easiest ways to cook vegetables, potatoes, fish, and other ingredients on the grill. They make cleanup simple and help lock in moisture and flavor.
- Keep the lid closed when possible. Every time you lift the lid, heat escapes. Keeping the grill closed helps maintain a consistent temperature and speeds up cooking.
- Let meat rest before serving. After grilling, allow steaks, burgers, pork chops, and chicken to rest for a few minutes before slicing. This helps the juices redistribute throughout the meat instead of running out onto the plate.
- Use an instant-read thermometer. The best way to know when meat is done is to check the internal temperature. A thermometer removes the guesswork and helps prevent both undercooking and overcooking.
- Clean the grill after cooking. Brush the grates while they’re still warm to remove any stuck-on food. Regular cleaning helps extend the life of your grill and makes your next cookout much easier.
Internal Temperatures for Grilling Meat
As you start making your way through these fun summer grill recipes, remember: Cooking meat always requires you to be adamant about internal temps. Steaks and burgers can be cooked to different temperatures depending on how done you want them. Then chicken, poultry, seafood, and pork all have different temps too.
I recommend checking our Internal Meat Temperature Charts and burger temperature chart to make it easy, plus there’s a printable version so you can always have it on hand. And pick up an instant read thermometer so you can check the temp…well, in an instant!

BONUS RECIPE: See the recipe card below for a basic step-by-step on how to grill a Steak.

How to Grill a Steak
Ingredients
- 4 Steaks
Instructions
- Trim excess fat from the steak (but leave a little bit for flavor)
- Let the steak sit at room temperature for at least 20 minutes before cooking
- Prepare the grill and heat up about 30 minutes before cooking
- Pat away extra moisture from the steak, and then season to your liking
- Sear steaks until they lift without sticking to the grates
- Turn your steaks over once and continue cooking
- Use meat thermometer to check internal temperatures. A medium-rare steak should heat to about 140 F. Medium will be closer to 155 F and Well Done should be at a temperature of 165 F.
- Remove the steaks from the grill when the thermometer reads about 5 degrees lower than you want it (the meat will continue cooking after removed from the grill).
- Let the steaks cool briefly before serving
